A CAFÉ which is now open after hours for wining and dining is celebrating a successful opening month.

No. 5 café owner Natasha Mead was determined to open the ‘After 5’ wine bar in December, despite being too late for Christmas parties, to make sure they could start the new year with a fully-fledged business.

Following a soft launch for local businesses and bloggers to come and spread the word, the wine bar in Bell Street officially opened on December 5 and was nearly full in the nights running up to Christmas.

But with people pledging to dry January, Natasha is hoping to welcome more customers with the development of a broader low or no-alcohol menu.

Natasha, 39, said: “January is a funny month because of the doom and gloom so it’s been hard to pick up customers. We’re updating our menus as we want to cater to all so that includes low and non alcoholic cocktails.

“We’ve received really good feedback but we’re still learning and improving as we go. The time of year is tricky but anything new likes this takes time for word to get around. The numbers that we’ve seen have been positive, considering when we opened and we’re hopeful it will become a popular long-standing venue in Romsey.

“We’re trying to explore what else customers want to see. Everyone has their own preferences and we’re providing a new experience in the area for those who want somewhere more intimate. We’re pleased with how it’s going and are grateful to all our regulars and new customers.”

Recently, Test Valley Borough Council approved the bar’s application to extend its opening hours to 11pm.

Natasha and her husband David bought the coffee shop at No 5 Bell Street in July with the long-term ambition of developing the wine bar. The business is now open 8.30am-4pm Monday to Saturday and 10am-3pm on Sundays for the café and 5pm-11pm Thursday to Saturday for the After 5 wine bar.

Before opening, the furniture and signs were updated. As well as wines from Romsey wholesaler Elegant Wines, there are cocktails made by an in-house mixologist, champagne and charcuterie boards.

The wine bar owners hope to develop a seasonal menu based on customer feedback with more gluten-free and vegan options available.
